A quick action tuning unit for use with string instruments is based upon a shaft mounted tensioner. The strings (S) of the instrument are brought over cam (7) guides that are pivotted on a common shaft (3). The cam position is determined by a tensioner (13) that has a multi-faceted surface. By rotating the tensioner the string is readily tuned. Each string has a facility, with its own tensioner (13) mounted on a common cylindrical spindle (11). The cam profile is retained by two parallel plates.
