New process for the chlorination of organic cpds. (I) contg. a replaceable H atom is as follows: a vapour phase mixt. of (I), HCl, and O2 is passed over a catalyst at 200-550 degrees. The catalyst consists of a CaF2 matrix, and a thermally stable phase (A phase) contg. Cu, Ca, and alkali metal or NH4 ions, ion combination with fluoride ions. Unlike known catalysts for oxyhydrochlorination reactions, the above catalyst is solid and non-volatile at high temps., and has good activity and selectivity for chlorination of (I) rather than destructive oxidn. In addn., the catalyst is non-corrosive to metals (e.g. Ni/Cr alloys), are hard and resistant to abrasion, and are non-agglomerating. In an example, a catalyst was prepd. by addn. of aq. KF (7 mol) to an aq. soln. of CaCl2 (1.5 mol.) and CuCl2 (0.5 mol). The solid was dried and washed with MeCN and MeOH.
|
