The DC motor driven ship has the motor speed controlled by a rectifier with thyristors and commutating chokes. Diesel or gas turbine engines drive alternators. In order to achieve an optimum efficiency at low motor speed a transformer is connected between the controlled rectifier and the a.c. supply. The primary and or secondary of the transformer is switched or shorted for the lower speeds. The system uses the full capacity of the rectifiers even at low motor speeds so that cable runs can be kept to an optimum thickness and an efficient performance assured. The transformer switching reduces the voltage applied to the rectifiers and increases the commutation reactance.
