Benzotrithioles of formula (I) and their 2-oxides (II) and their salts are new. In the formulae Y is H, cyano, alkylsulphonyl, nitro or CF3; X is =6C alkyl, =6C alkenyl, nitro, CCl3-, CF3-, CF3O-, CF3S-, CF3SO-, CF3SO2-, CH3O-CH2-, cyano, carboxy, carbamyl, halo, hydroxy, acetylamino, amino, N-phenylamino, N,N-diallylamino, alkoxy, morpholino, piperidino, piperazino, pyrrolidino, dimethylamino-dithiocarbamyl, carbalkoxy, alkylthio, mono- or di-alkylamino, N-alkylcarbamyl, N,N-dialkylcarbamyl, alkylsulphinyl, alkylsulphonyl (where alkyl gps. have 1-4C atoms) and n is 0-3). (I) and (II) are biocides esp. herbicides, fungicides, acaricides, nematocides and insecticides used to improve the growth and/or crop yield of desired plants by application to the soil, plants or their seeds. The cpds. are formulated in classical compositions and are used as herbicides at 5.6-89.6 g/are, as soil fungicides at 2.77-448.3 g/are, as fungicide for seeds at 1.25-6.25 g/kg, as fungicides for application to foliage at about 200 ppm, as acaricides at 30-1000 ppm, as nematocides at 15-20 ppm and as insecticides as a 0.2-10% solution.
