The additional damping winding (7) for counteracting transient flux changes within the pole body is accommodated within the pole insulation. It may either be formed into the pole body insulation (4) or into the pole tip washer (6) between the winding and the pole shoe. The additional damper is typically made of ribbon material. The damping winding may be left open and the ends are joined by a voltage dependent device and a spark gap in series. By such means the damper only becomes active when a preset voltage is induced in it.
