Opposed cylinder IC engine - has outer pistons of each pair linked by connecting rods outside cylinders

The engine has a pair of cylinders (41, 42) on opposite sides of the crankshaft (6). There is a second pair (43, 44) of opposed cylinders alongside the first pair. Each cylinder contains two pistons (11, 12, 13, 14) reciprocating in opposite directions. The inner pistons (11, 13) of each pair of cylinders are linked by connecting rods (31) to a common big end bearing (7). The outer pistons (12, 14) of each pair are linked together by rods (32) outside the cylinders which are also joined to bearings (6) on the crankshaft. The reciprocating masses are totally balanced in a compact assembly which lends itself to cheap construction.
