The vibration damper automatically adjusts to the excitation frequency of a shaft subject to torsional vibration. It comprises a damper mass turning about the shaft vibration axis and coupled to the shaft by one or more spring components. A device is provided to adjust the hardness of the springing between the shaft (2) and damper mass (3) until resonance of the mass occurs. This is dependent on the phase position of an auxiliary oscillating member (5) coupled to the shaft in relation to that of the shaft itself.
