The sintered varistor body is subjected to a heat treatment of only one cycle, by being held for from one to ten hours within a temperature range of from 580 DEG C to 780 DEG C. Curve F shows that in the event of a heat treatment of one times four hours at 580 DEG C a leakage current stability is achieved which is qualitatively as good as by cyclic treatment of four times one hour according to curves D and G. The ordinate shows the leakage current and the abscissa the leakage current stability in hours. The invention is suitable for fabricating zinc oxide varistors having good leakage current characteristics at high ageing. <IMAGE>
