A preheating installation for ladles, converters of the like melt containers 1a, 1b, comprises a plurality of stations 22, 23 spaced apart along a roadway, e.g. a rail track provided by rails 26. Each station includes means 25 for supporting a container with its axis horizontal and with its open end confronting the roadway. A heated means is mounted on a wheeled base 9 movable along the roadway, whereby the heating means may be brought opposite the open end of each container in turn. The heating means comprises a hood 2 engageable, in substantially gas-tight manner, with the open end of a container and having at least one fuel burner 3 for heating the interior of a container at least one conduit 4a for exhausting gaseous combustion products a pipe 7 for supplying combustion air 3 in heat- exchange relationship with the conduit or conduits 4a.
