New peptide complexes (I) derived from DNA-contg. organisms have the following characteristics: (a) mol. wt. 5000; (b) they form an RNA cpd. having an av. mol. wt. of 900-20,000 and giving a single well-defined bond on gel. electrophoresis and acetate-foil electrophoresis; (c) they are pref. of intracellular origin; (d) they contain Ca; (e) they give a pptn. reaction with Tb3+; (f) they are highly water-soluble; (g) they have an av. aspartic and glutamic acid content of ca. 30 mole %, based on total amino acids; (h) the molar ratio of aspartic and glutamic acid to lysine and arginine is >1; (i) their amino acid compsn. is specific to their origin; (j) they exhibit antigenic activity; (k) they promote resistance to infection. Complexes (I) can be used to induce specific antibody prodn., to detect the presence of specific antibodies or delayed immunity states, to increase resistance to infection, and to transfer specific delayed immunity from one patient to another. The prodn. of (I) involves chromatography on DEAE cellulose. |
