An apparatus for lifting heavy road vehicles with low ground clearance consists of a vertical column (5) mounted on a base frame (1) fitted with castors (2). The column (5) forms a vertical guide for a sliding carriage (6) which is actuated by an internal screwed rod driven from an electric motor (13). The sliding carriage (5) carries a rectangular frame constructed from square section tubes. The forward upper tube (28) of this frame has a row of holes for the attachment of chains (C) which have hooks for picking up one end of the vehicle. The other end of the vehicle is raised by an identical apparatus.
