Strongly alkaline, aq. solns. of nonionic surfactants are prepd. by adding, as solubilisers, ene-adducts, (I), of maleic anhydride to unsaturated 12-24C fatty acids or their triglycerides. Wt. ratio solubiliser:surfactant is 1:1 to 10:1. (I) prevent formation of a separate phase, e.g. at pH 9-12 and have a wide activity range. Solubilising activity is based on the simultaneous presence of hydrophilic carboxylate gps. and lipophilic mol. residue.
