The battens are perforated sheets folded in the form of a U, or extruded sections. The arms of the U are engaged in and carried by struts. The struts have cut-outs and grooves which receive the arms and are of chemically inert thermally insulating material, preferably plastics. The cut-outs allow a gap between adjacent battens for passage of liquid and excrement. The arms are inclined so as to provide a diverging self clearing passage between adjacent battens. The struts are mounted on supports and protect them from corrosion.
