A shield (3) bearing against the heading face is advanced hydraulically via a trailing tube (4), new concrete tubes (5) being continuously pushed along. The material is transferred from an excavating unit (8) to a conveyor belt (18) and from the latter to a haulage truck (21), the conveyor belt (18) being operated at two different speeds. While the haulage truck (21) is being unloaded outside the tunnel, the conveyor belt (18) runs at the lower speed and is loaded over its entire length with material, which is emptied at the higher belt speed after the empty haulage truck (21) has arrived. The interplay of excavating unit, conveyor belt and haulage equipment permits continuous driving. <IMAGE>
