The active bow rudder for yachts or ships involves a pump driven by the propulsion engine supplying ambient water under pressure to a transverse pipe near the bows feeding nozzles either side of the centreline, in the submerged part of the hull. The pump suction line includes a strainer. Flow quantities and pressures in the system are controllable by remotely, pref. pneumatically, operated valves at inlet to the suction line, in the lines to the bow nozzles and in a bypass line from pump discharge to suction. The sideways thrust of the nozzles gives the sudden effect.
