The gutter consists of a base layer (a), formed esp. by refractory bricks, followed by a layer (b) of hard minerals in direct contact with the molten material. Layer (b) is a dry mass consisting of grains of different size so that vibration and mechanical consolidation raises the density of the layer (b); and the m.pt. of mass (b) is selected so the mass sinters due to heat provided by the molten metal. Mass (b) may be covered by a consumable- or combustible layer (c) disappearing during the sintering operation; and mass (b) is esp. a mixt. of 80% bauxite or corundum, 15% of magnesia, and 5% silicates. The gutter is easy to make and to repair, and has a long working life. |
