New polymers are prepd. by subjecting at least one 4-6C conjugated diene and opt. >=1 vinylaromatic cpd. to anionic polymerisation to form a polymer with a Mn of 20,000-30,000 (pref. 30,000-150,000), and subjecting this to (a) reaction with an N-substd. lactam of formula (I): (where Z is 1-20C alkyl 2-10C alkenyl, or phenyl opt. substd. by 1-10C alkyl; n=2-11, and (b) hydrogenation. The initial polymer is pref. a polymer of butadiene, isoprene or dimethylbutadiene, a statistical or block copolymer of one of these dienes with styrene or alpha-methylstyrene, or a star-shaped copolymer also contg. divinylbenzene. It is pref. prepd. by anionic polymerisation at 80-150 degrees C (esp. 0-100 degrees C) in the presence of an organometallic catalyst (esp. n-BuLi or 1,4-dilithio-1, 1,4,4-tetraphenylbutane). Prefd. cpds. (I) are N-methyl-, N-ethyl- and N-vinyl-pyrrolidone or -caprolactam.
|
