The cross country ski is fitted with a mechanical climbing aid made as a brake preventing back sliding. The body of the ski (1) is equipped in a longitudinal direction and in the area of the ski binding with at least one runner (3). This can be moved in or out. It is fitted with a saw tooth profile with the steeper edges of the saw teeth located at the rear relative to the direction of sliding. The upper side of the ski (4) is fitted with a device permitting the runner or runners (3) to be locked in either the withdrawn or projecting position.
