Hydrophobic, oleophilic mat, useful for the removal of floatable oil efficiently from waters, was described. Tree roots of wild grass were purified, broken, and heated at 300≦̸C in a heating kettle to give a non-woven fabric, oleophilic mat contg. uncarbonized cellulose. oil and fat, and conc. H2SO4 were added to the mat, and heated in a reacting kettle for 3-4hr to give the title mat contg. sulfonated cellulose.
