<p>A bombardment proof object consists totally or partially of chilled cast iron, and may be composed of individual members made up in layers. The layers may be joined to each other loosely, or by welding, soldering, nuts and bolts, etc. and the layers may have staggered joints. Underlayers may be perforated and thermal insulation layers may be interposed between any two layers. A typical underlayer is martensitic steel, G-Ni steel, Al(alloy), plastic or fibre-glass. A typical cast iron overlayer may have the compsn., (by wt.) 1.5-12% C, 1-40% Cr, 0-10% Ni, 0-4% Si, 0-20% Mn, 0-10% Mo, 0-5% Cu, which may include tungsten carbide inserts or rod-shaped steel inlays. The object may include a thick steel base plate as under layer with >=1 hard surfacing layer on it, the altter consisting of 4-6% C, 20-30% Cr, 5-8% Nb, 5-8% Mo, 1-3%W. Used for protection of civil and military installations e.g. vehicles, buildings, etc. The objects have low weight and high immunity to bombardment, while being cheap and adaptable to a very wide variety of applications.</p> |
