An electrolytic cell plant comprises a number of cell units connected in series, each consisting of a number of electrolytic cells comprising cathode and anode frames and arranged like a filter press in a monopolar array, with partition walls between them. The cathode frames of one cell unit are electrically connected to the anode frames of the adjacent cell unit. Pref. the cell units are arranged parallel to and spaced apart from one another in their longitudinal axis direction. More specifically, each electrode frame has an electrical connection in the side frame component for a connecting element to the adjacent cell unit. Typically for chlorine-alkali electrolysis, eps. the prodn. of Cl2, H2 and caustic alkalis from aq. solns. of alkaline chlorides. Also for the electrolytic decomposition of HCl. Low mfg. costs and good operating properties are provided.
