<p>The engine has a piston (4) reciprocating in a cylinder (2). The piston has a base section (4a) which forms the lower part of the skirt and has the bearings for the gudgeon pin (5). A composite upper section (6, 7) is held to the base section by bolts (10) inserted from the underside. The upper section consists of a metal protective cap (7) and a silicon glass outer cap (6). The silicon glass cap is sintered onto the metal cap with dovetail joints between them. A similar double protective layer (6', 7') is applied to the upper part of the inside of the cylinder.</p> |
