The instrument which detaches caps and bridges used in dentistry has a weight moved against a stop on a hook. The hook position (1) is joined to an inner tube (5) in which the weight (8) slides against spring action towards the hook, being locked by a detachable catch mechanism (16, 20). The inner portion fits at the end furthest from the hook telescopically inside an outer component (25) forming a grip, and incorporating an actuator (28) for the weight. The inner portion and the grip can both be of cylindrical cross-section.
