Inhibiting ripple formation on rail tread - by austenitic heat treatment of central strip and cooling at restricted rate

Rails for tram and railway systems are heated to produce a longitudinal strip along the centre of their tread which differs in its properties from the rest of the tread. After preheating to over 400 degrees C, this strip is heated to an austenitic temperature of is not >1050 degrees C and is allowed to cool at a restricted rate. Pref. the preheated zone is 1 1/2 times as large. Vibrations and increased maintenance costs caused by ripples are avoided and the wear resistance of the rails is improved.
