Immobile oxidisable cpd. used in a Ag halide photographic diffusion transfer material is a substd. benzyl thioether or sulphone cpd. (I) of the formula phi-CR 1R2-Z-(A)m-A (where phil is a benzene ring substd by Y1 in the 3-position, Y2 in the 2-, 4- or 6-position, R3 in the 5-position and R4 and R5 in the remaining positions. A is photographically active gp. X is a bivalent bridging gp. of the formula -R-(L) -(R) -; R is 1-6C alkyl or (substd) ar(alk)ylene; L is -O-,p -COq-, -CONR6-, -SO2-NR6- (R6 is H or alkyl), -S-, -SO- or -SO2-p and q are 0 or 1. Y1 and Y2 independently are gps. which, through mutual interaction, can be oxidised to an o- or p- quinoid system. Z is -SO2- or -S-. R1 is (substd.) hydrocarbyl. R2 is H or (substd.) hydrocarbyl. R3, R4 and R5 are H, halogen, 1-18C alkylor alkoxy or acylamino or R3 with R4 or R5 completes a condensed (substd.) hydrocarbon ring. m is 0 or 1. At least one of the R1, R3, R4 and R5 substits. contains a gp. imparting immobility). (I) are a new class of immobile cpds., which release active cpds., esp. mobile dyestuffs, on alkaline hydrolysis in the unoxidised form but are not or only slightly hydrolysed when oxidised.
|
