Benzulpicolinic acid derivs. [I; R = H or lower alky1 , useful as antihypertensiyes and dopamine β-hydroxylase inhibitors, are prepd. by std. procedures. thus, 3.35g sodium nitrate powder mixed with 7g 5-benzyl-picolinic acid and the mixture reacted with 70ml conc. sulfonic acid at -5-0≦̸C. the reaction product was added with the cold water and ammonia and refluxed with ethanol afrer 5hr to give 5-(4-nitrobenzyl) picolinic acid.
