Title compds. (I; R = H, lower alkyl), useful as dopamin β-hydroxylase inhibitors, were prepd. by catalytic redn. of II with H2 gas, or reaction of III with CH3COC1 at room temp. Thus, catalytic redn. of 3.0g 5-(4-nitrobenzyl) picolinic acid methylester with 6.0g palladium-carbon (5%) in 150ml acetic acid-acetic anhydride(4:1) gives afrer 1.5hr 1.5g I (R = CH3).
