Gas-tight ball valve consists of a ball and seating made from a hard material such as Si3N4, sintered Al2O3, sapphire or ruby. The edge of the scating is broken so that the two surfaces form an obtuse angle and the ball seats on one of the surfaces. The seat and broken surface are lapped the seating surface is polished. The included angle (average) of the seat is 90-120 degrees. The valve is gas tight and withstands pressures of up to 600 bar. The ball and seating are made from the same material.
