Title compd. (I) was prepd. by reaction of 1 mol maleic acid (II) and Ca compd. (0.4-0.6 gratom as Ca/1 mol II) aq. soln. or suspension at the presence of H2O2and epoxydation catalyst and then Ca compd. (0.6-0.4 gr atm. as Ca/1 mol II) added at >= 40OC to give cryst. from I below 100μ av. diam. Thus, 98g maleic anhydride in 400ml water, 6.6g sodium tungstate, 50g CaCO3, and 102g H2O2 were reacted at 30OC for 7hr and then 50g CaCO3 was added to give 248g I (purity 99.5%, av. diam. 72μ).
