Bottle filling and closing machines operate on a base plate over which any spilled liquid, for example from a broken bottle, runs off. At convenient points, drain holes collect the spilled liquid for re-use. The base plate (1) is bent over at the rim or receives a separate U-shaped gutter (2) flush with the door(3) below. The steel section (4) is lined with lengths of an elastomer extrusion(5) which extends preferably with one flange above the bent-up flange. The extrusion (5) has a slight outward prestress in its flanges and can be readily removed for sterilisation.
