<p>1,245,812. Producing glass filaments. W. H. W. SCHULLER. 21 Nov., 1968 [23 Nov., 1967], No. 55383/68. Heading C1M. In drawing filaments from vitreous thermoplastic material, threads 2a, 2b, 2c of molten vitreous material contact the surface of a rotating drawing drum 1 at a first location and are carried and drawn thereby to a scraper 4 where the filaments are stripped off the drum, sizing material being applied directly to the surface of the drum. Apparatus is also claimed comprising the drum 1, stripping means 4 and applicator means 9 for the size at a point upstream of the first location and downstream of scraper 4. The applicator means 9 may comprise dispensing means reciprocating along the length of the drum to spread size over the drum, or may comprise means for dripping or spraying the size on to the drum. The speed of rotation of the drum may cause the formation of an entrained boundary gaseous layer G or G<SP>1</SP>, whose motion may prevent proper sizing material application. To prevent this a baffle 8 may be provided upstream of applicator 9, and this baffle causes a current S which assists size deposition on the drum. The baffle may be adjustable so that it may move in directions B, C, D and E as shown, and it may be deflected about axis 12 when contacted with material that may adhere to the drum.</p> |
