New phosphitoxetane cpds. are of formula (I) In (I), n is 1 or 2; R1 is 1-30 C alkyl or 6-30 C aryl; R2 is alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, halo-, cyano-, alkoxy-, aryloxy-, aralkyloxy- or acyloxy-methyl; and A is a sterically hindered phenol gp. of formula (II); and R3-5 are each H, halo or 1-4 C alkyl, provided R3 and/or R5 do not both denote H. (I) stabilise thermoplastics, esp. aromatic polycarbonates, polyolefins, PVC and polyesters, against heat and hydrolysis. Polycarbonate compsns. stabilised with (I) resist yellowing at high moulding temps.
