A product for sepn. of mixts. of water and oil is made by (1) treating an inorganic solid contg. surface OH gps. with a cpd. of formula (where R is a 1-20C organic gp; R1 and R2 are halogen or 1-20C organic gps; Y is halogen or OR3; R3 is H or 1-20C alkyl, aryl or acyl; X is halogen), followed by (2) treatment at elevated temp. with a N-substd. imite (II) of an alkenyl-substd. dicarboxylic acid. Used for purificn. of wash waters contg. oil or oil products from tankers, treatment of effluent waters from oil refineries, etc. and also removal of water from oil. Coalescence of oil and water particles is achieved, causing sepn. into two phases.
