The internal-combustion engine has a cylinder block with head and a sparking plug screwed into the latter. Opposite the cylinder bore (2) the head face (19) is flat, while the piston (12) is flat-topped (18) with a recess (16), opposite a further one (5) in the head. The spark gap (11') of the plug (11) is in the recess in the head (4) and eccentric to the cylinder bore axis. The edges of the recesses in piston and head coincide in the axial direction of the cylinder, and at top dead centre the flat faces of piston and head form a squeeze zone diametrally opposite the spark gap (20).
