A weir (1) is constructed at the side of a flowing river. A vertical shaft (2) joins a horizontal shaft (3) through the base of the weir. There is a controlling damper (4) in the horizontal shaft. A large quantity of water dropping in the vertical shaft raises a smaller quantity through a greater height on the other side of the weir. This is accumulated behind the weir to produce a reservoir with sufficient head and quantity to drive a hydroelectric installation of significant output. The pumping system enables a low head source to be effectively utilised.
