The skin of a side drum comprising an open cylinder is tensioned and tuned by control of the skin tension by the uses during its use. This is achieved by operation of a foot pedal to free the musicians hands. The drum is open at the base to be mounted on a tripod with a moving frame (4) and attached by its upper axis to a fixed frame (2). This is attached by its lower moving axis to a shaft (10) with a variable length and moving in a sliding tube (5, 6) which supports another frame (3). This frame is bolted (11) to a metallic circle (1) which provides initial tuning of the skin (O). The shaft is operated by a pedal (9) via a lever system (8) to position the moving frame via cams to tension the skin.
