The overhead supporting system for a fluorescent lamp (14) uses screws (30) which pass vertically through the housing (10) behind the lamps. These screws are longer than the depth of the housing, and their projecting points screw into a surface (29) above the lamp. The lamp is attached by brackets (13) to the housing, and the heads (32) of the screws are flush with the cover (11) which fits over its open bottom. Between the overhead surface and the closed top (12) of the housing nuts (21) mounted on the screws, so that when a nut is tightened, the outwardly bent cutting edges (31) of a tube through which the screw passes pierce an insulating layer on the cover to form a positive connection.
