High purity sterol glycoside prepn. - by extraction sterol glycoside mixt. from suitable raw material, tetra-acetylating extract, selective sepn. and hydrolysis

Prepn. of high purity sterol glycoside comprises (a) extracting a sterol glycoside mixt. from the most suitable raw material which is so selected taking free sterols existing in the raw material as index; (b) tetraacetylating the extract; (c) sepg. only the desired fraction by liq. chromatography; and then (d) hydrolysing the active fraction to obtain the original sterol glycoside. The selection of the raw material is based on the finding that the type and the constituting proportion of the free sterols always coexisting in the sample are well consistent with those of sterol glycosides. When compared with sterol glycosides, free sterols can be precisely analysed in a short time by means of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis (GC-MS), etc. without requiring special treatments such as acid decompsn.
