Optimal conditions of arc extinguishing within a short distance and time combined with low loss of arc quenching gas as well as design simplification are ensured by a contact (8) and the stroke limiting abutment (12). The gas operated cylinder (2b) is movable while its piston (2a) is stationary and the first contact (6) is fitted in the isolating nozzle (4) of the cylinder. The recess (7) of contact (6) is engaged by the conical projection of contact (8) which is shiftable in the upper part (10) of the circuit breaker where it is biased by spring (14). Disengagement of the two contacts is facilitated by slots which allows for expansion. The movement is controlled by a rod (30) driving a contact (6) together with the cylinder and nozzle when the insulating gas is compressed.
