The hand-held device is for adding valves, e.g. for sums of money, and is very simply operated by hand, very small, i.e. can be carried in a pocket, and can be used to total a number of sums of money. The valve input mechanisms, which can be mechanical and/or electrical mechanisms such as gear or friction wheels or tapes etc., are arranged in rows for ones, tens, hundreds etc. Each row has numericals 0 to 9 and if numeral 9 is exceeded in a row the next row is incremented and the given row returns to zero. In order to achieve this each individually driven rotary element (16) has a ratchet arrangement (6, 7) which comes into operation when the upper valve (i.e. 9) is exceeded.
