2-Isopropyl-4-(2-thenoyl)-5-methyl-phenoxy acetic acid (I), useful as choleretic agent, was prepd. by refluxing in ketone of 2-isopropyl-4-(-thenoyl)-5-methylphenol(II) with ethyl bromoacetate(III) and hydrolysis. Thus, the mixt. of 31.44 g(0.12 mol) II, 400 ml CH3COC2H5, 33 ml III, 24 g CaCO3 and KI was refluxed to give 38.4 g ethyl eater of I. The ester was refluxed for 3 hr with 22 g(0.55 mol) NaOH and 600 g EtOH followed by adding 34 ml (10% excess) CH3COOH to give I.
