PURPOSE:The oxidative dehydrogenation of isobutyric acid in vapor phase is effected in the presence of a catalyst that consists of Mo, V, P, Pd, and O as essential components and has high initial activity, heat resistance and shows less reduction in the activity to produce methacrylic acid. CONSTITUTION:The oxidative dehydrogenation of isobutyric acid in vapor phase is effected in the presence of a catalyst containing Mo, V, P, Pd and O as essential components such as a composition of formula I (X is Li, Na, Mg, Ca or Sr; a is 10; b is 0.1-4; c is 0.1-3; d is 0.01-2; e is 0-2; f depends on the valency of each atom) to produce methacrylic acid. The optimistic catalyst is a heteropolyacid of formula II (x is integral number of 1-4; y is 0, 1 or 2) or a lead salt of reduction- type heteroacid of formula III (n is integral number of 1-8). The further addition of Li, Mg or Ca increases the activity and heat resistance of the catalyst. |
