NEW MATERIAL:A lactone of an octanoic acid shown by the formula (R is 4C straight-chain saturated or double-bond-containing alkyl having CH3 at gamma-position). EXAMPLE:2,7-Dimethyl-4-hydroxy-5,7-octadienoic acid lactone. USE:A raw material for perfume (providing flavor and taste of fruit, milk, etc.). An improving agent, modifier, and enhancer for fragance of various kinds of perfume compositions, e.g., composition of fruit, vanilla, etc. PROCESS:Diethyl-3-oxoglutarate is reacted with metallyl chloride to give 6-methyl- 3-oxo-4-carboethoxy-6-heptenoic acid ethyl ester, from which 2,7-dimethyl-4-hydroxy-7-octanoic acid lactone shown by the formula is synthesized. The double bond of the compound shown by the formula, is transferred from 7- to 6-position, chlorinated, and dehydrochlorinated to give the compound in the example. |
