A torsional vibration damper assembly to provide extended travel for the dampening effect which is achieved by the use of two concentric series of damper springs (73, 74, 75), (76, 77, 78) interconnected through a common housing or intermediate member. A driving plate (23) has two or more drive tangs (28) secured thereon, which tangs extend inwardly into the path of the outer circle of damping springs (73, 74, 75). One or more floating divider rings are journalled in the assembly and have ears (66, 69) projecting into the path of the springs as do outer drive straps (55) of the intermediate member. Floating wedges or skates (81) are located between the springs (76, 77, 78) of the inner circle along with inner drive straps (61) of the intermediate member and hub arms (97) in the path of the inner springs; the hub (93) being driven through the circles of springs to drive a transmission input shaft (22). Use of the damper assembly in conjunction with a torque converter lock up clutch is described, the driving plate 23 being the clutch operating piston and the hub being connected to the turbine of a torque converter. <IMAGE> |
