Dialkyl esters of 5-carbo[etiocholane-3' alpha -7' alpha , 12' alpha -trihydroxy-17' beta (1'' methyl-4' butyl]oxy-4-hydroxy-4-methylpentyl-1-phosphonate and 5-carbohexadecyloxy-4-hydroxy-4-methylpentyl-1-phosphonate are shown to inhibit cholesterol biosynthesis in rat liver cells. Preparation of the active compounds is given.
