PURPOSE:To improve the read performance by detecting the white drop-out of quantization patterns and making use of the same in an optical character reader which reads characters automatically. CONSTITUTION:The luminous flux generated from a lamp 9 is made into parallel rays which pass through a half-mirror 11 and irradiate an engraved surface 12. In the part where the shape of the engraved surface 12 is of a V-state, the rays are irradiated at an incident angle theta, but in other places, they make specular reflection at an incident angle 0 deg. and are inputted to a photodetector 13. In the quantization pattern 18 obtained in this way, the continuous black signal is obtained but a white drop-out part 24 is produced in the other quantization pattern 22. Horizintal and vertical scanning is accomplished with the quantization paterns detected in this way, and the white drop-out patterns are detected and are outputted to a discriminating part. |
