HF power supply transformer winding - has stacked printed circuit turns for low skin loss and good flux linkage with electrostatic screening

The form of winding is especially suitable for the secondary windings of HF power supply transformers because of the good coupling between windings, the low skin effect losses and the effective electrostatic screening between windings. The winding is made from a stack of discreete elements coaxially mounted on a magnetic core. Each element consists of one or more conducting turns which are thin but wide. The ends of the windings are extended in the form of tongues away from the centre of the winding and these are used to connect the turns together. The remainder of the winding is insulated, the ends of the turn being separated by a small gap. Each element may consist of a double sided printed circuit, each face carrying a number of windings, the inner windings on both faces being joined together. Electrostatic screens are formed by an element with only one end of the turn extended to form the screen connection.
