<p>This invention disclosed a new and commercially useful process for the preparation of phenoxypropylamine derivative of the general formula (I): (I) and the acid addition salts thereof, wherein, R is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group, R1 is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl or aryl group or R and R1 together represent a divalent, optionally branched hydrocarbon group, optionally substituted, R2 is an alkyl, aralkyl, or aryl group and R3 is an alkyl, hydroxyalkyl, cycloalkyl or cyanalkyl group. This process comprises reacting an alkali metal salt of a phenol of general formula (II) (II) with a compound or mixture of compounds of the general formula (III) (III) in which X is a group or and R4 is hydrogen or a group which can be split off hydrogenolytically, and when R4 is hydrogen isolating the product of formula I as either the free base or as the acid addition salt. When R4 is a group which can be split off hydrogenolytically the process further comprises the step of splitting off the group and then isolating the product of formula(I) as either the free base or the acid addition salt.</p> |
