Coal is converted to liq. hydrocarbon fuels by hydrogenation in the presence of solvent contg. fractions with b.p.<= 200≦̸C>=20, fractions solid at room temp. >=10, and fractions with b. p. 200-450≦̸C <=30% at a temp. above the crit. temp. of the low-boiling fraction, with distn. and partial recycle of the solvent-product mixt. Thus, 400 g powd. Waterberg coal impregnated with 2.9% MoO3, 2.6g S, 600g PhMe, and 600g PhMe, and 600g heavy solvent are strirred 75min at 450≦̸C/200 atm to give yields(dry, ash-free coal basis) of C1-3 products 14,48, products C4 to b. 200≦̸C 16.1, products b. 200-400≦̸C 44.1, and products b. >400≦̸C 0%.
