A process is used for chamfering the peripheral edges of ports(16,17) in the cylinder wall(12) particularly of a 2-stroke combustion engine. At least the upper and lower edges of the ports, which are at right angles to the direction of piston movement, are produced so as to have concave portions which are curved in longitudinal and radial direction relative to the cylinder. The transition between these concave portions and the inner surface of the cylinder wall are subsequently chamfered using a rotating tool(36, 37) with smooth circumference.
